The Paleolithic or “Paleo” diet was inspired by food that European’s cavemen ancestors ate a few thousand years ago and has become popular in recent years for its purported weight loss and gut health benefits.  That is, despite the fact that the diet includes a great deal of meat and saturated fat.  However, new research suggests that following this diet too closely may increase risk of heart disease.

Particularly the increased meat and exclusion of whole grains increase the levels of TMAO which is a metabolite associated with heart disease. The study was conducted by researchers at Edith Cowan University in Australia. For more on the study, click here.
