Jazmine Barnes, a 7-year-old black girl was shot and killed when riding in a car with her mother and three sisters on December 30. According to authorities, Erick Black Jr. was apprehended and arrested in connection with her murder days later on Saturday evening.

Earlier accounts had reported that the gunman was a White man who had sped away in a red pickup truck. However, anonymous tips led police to Eric Black Jr. According to sources, Barnes and her family were not intentionally targeted but was the subject of mistaken identity.

Civil Rights attorney Lee Merritt and writer Shaun King had worked closely with Jazmine’s family and offered an award of $75.000 leading to the capture of her killer. Deandre Hopkins of the Houston Texans football team also offered his playoff game check worth $29,000 to pay for her  funeral and other expenses.

Jazmine’s mother, LaPorsha Washington was also shot in the arm and her 6-year-old sister suffered injuries from broken glass, according to authorities.

At a news conference on Monday, Jazmine’s father, Chris Cevilla, said she had been doing well in school and was a “sweet” and “innocent” young girl.
