Noted literary critic and African-American studies scholar Henry Louis Gates recently gifted Spelman College with its largest ever donation of books. In fact, it is the largest ever donation of books to an HBCU.

In all, the donation includes approximately 14,000 volumes, according to Spelman’s website. They focus on African diasporic history and culture and will be housed in the Atlanta University Center’s Robert Woodruff Library. The books come from Gates’s personal collection and will be used for regular circulation and archival purposes.

“These volumes from my library can have no more meaningful home than Spelman College,” said Dr. Gates. “Generations of African-American women and men have ‘made a way out of no way,’ as we all know, and binding us together and leading us have been the strongest and most brilliant Black women, who recognized and lived the importance of education as the gateway to knowledge, opportunity and empowerment.”

Gates is the Alphonse Fletcher University professor and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University.

The collection will be made available to all AUC students and faculty beginning on November 1, 2018.
