The Congressional Black Caucus called for the decriminalization of marijuana use, and stated that Black communities have been disproportionately “policed and convicted for drug offenses,” according to the Associated Press.

In a position paper released on Friday, the caucus stated that it supports reforms that would reduce the number of Black people in prison, including the removal of marijuana from the class of the most dangerous drugs, which will also allow for needed research to be completed on marijuana use.

Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA.) stated that the war on drugs has been a “war on Black and Brown communities.”
