On Tuesday, Spelman College president Mary Schmidt Campbell announced that the all-women’s HBCU will accept transgender students for the first time starting in the Fall 2018 semester. Specifically, they will begins admitting qualified “women students including students who consistently live and self-identify as women, regardless of their gender assignment at birth.”

Though they will not accept students who were born female and have transitioned to male prior to applying for the college, they will allow individuals to graduate who were born female but have transitioned to male after being accepted to Spelman.

The decision was made after a task force consisting of students, faculty, staff, and alumnae studied the issue. A committee will also be composed to study the impact of the policy change at a later date.

According to Diverse Issues in Higher Education, eight other women’s colleges accept transgender students. One such is Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina which is the only other women’s college HBCU.

Earlier in the year, Spelman also created a new scholarship initiative and lecture series focusing on LGBTQ issues. Whereas applicants do not have to identify as LGBTQ to receive the scholarship reward, they are required to be advocates for this community.
