Though many Kenyans are overjoyed, it is not without controversy. The $3 billion project was financed by a Chinese company. A Chinese company will also operate the train line for the first five years.

This is one of many African infrastructure projects financed by China in an attempt to build stronger economic connections between the continent and country. Its detractors argue that Kenyans should take more control of the project and should not develop any unilateral allegiances to China as it will be similar to neocolonialism.

Its supporters argue that this is just the first step to an economic renaissance of sorts for Kenya. All countries, they say, require investment and this is merely a stepping stone to make Kenya self-sufficient.
