NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is not allowing his free agency status to derail his activism. Earlier this month, he took his “Know Your Rights” camp to Chicago at the city’s historic DuSable Museum of African American History.

Musicians Common and Keri Hilson joined him for the daylong event.

According to the camp’s website, it is “a free campaign for youth fully funded by Colin Kaepernick to raise awareness on higher education, self empowerment, and instruction to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios.”

The website also has helpful resources that, among other things, provide a history of why mainstream society falsely believes that Black males are dangerous, stemming from the period of enslavement.

Given the campaign’s focus on history, students who attended the event had a history challenge and were also given DNA kits from ancestry.com.
