The white Texas police officer who shot and killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards was charged with murder last Tuesday.

Roy Oliver, the officer who killed the black teen, 37, turned himself in at the Parker County Jail and was arrested this past Friday night. Bail was set at $300,000. He posted bond and was out before 10 p.m.

Edwards was leaving a party the previous Saturday night with friends. He was struck by Oliver’s bullet through the passenger-side window of the vehicle in which he was traveling, according to attorney S. Lee Merritt, legal counsel for Jordan’s family

The Balch Springs Police Department initially released a statement in which they reported that the young men were “backing down the street toward officers in an aggressive manner.”

However, Police Chief Jonathan Haber later retracted his statement about the direction that the car was traveling, noting that “After reviewing the body-cam footage, I don’t believe that [the fatal shooting] met our core values,” Haber said.

The video showed the car Edwards was in traveling away from the police officer at the time of the shooting.

Haber said that Oliver was fired for violating policies but he refused to speak about any specifics. According to the Dallas Morning News, Oliver is also the second Dallas-area police officer to be charged with murder in the last two years. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
